Scared At Night
Words and music by Laura Hall © 1995
It was a night like any other.
I was snuggled up in bed with my favorite blankie.
I’d had my bath, I was reading a book, I had my teddy by my side.
I was feeling pretty good. And then…SHE walked in…Mom.
She said, “Honey, it’s time for bed”.
And I said “Oh please, mom, just let me read
for five more minutes,
then I’ll go right to bed I promise!”
But she said, “No, it’s time for bed.”
She kissed me goodnight, she turned out the light and shut the door.
Well then it got really dark in my room.
And here I was all alone, just me and teddy.
And then I noticed it.
I could barely make it out in the dark,
but there was something big and lumpy on my floor.
Like maybe a giant lumpy monster coming to get me!
So I called out,
Mama, there’s something right here in my room
And then teddy got a little scared and he called out too
Daddy, you better get in here soon
Well, they came running in, and they turned on the light.
And I told them all about the monster and everything.
So we looked, and… there were the clothes I’d worn that day,
in a pile on the floor where I’d thrown them.
It sort of looked like a monster.
Oops, I guess it’s not a monster after all.
So when they left, they turned the night light on.
Now it wasn’t so dark. Nothing to be afraid of.
Then I noticed it, this sort of scratching noise outside my window.
Like maybe a tiger with sharp claws trying to climb in my window!
Mama, there’s something trying to get in my room
This time teddy was very brave, he didn’t call out, but I did!
Daddy, you better get in here soon
Well they came back in, but they didn’t look too happy about it.
So I explained to them all about the tiger outside my window.
And we looked, and… that’s when I noticed the tree branches,
and how the wind would blow them against the window.
Oops, I guess it’s not a tiger after all.
And then Dad said, “You know what?
When you’re lying in bed, try thinking of things that make you happy,
instead of things that make you scared.”
And Mom said, “That’s right.
You could think about your birthday party
when all your friends came, or the day you learned
to ride your bike all by yourself.”
And I said,
Mama, I’m fine right here in my room
See, Teddy, I told you there was nothing to be afraid of
Daddy, I won’t be needing you soon....goodnight!
